Although there are many studies suggesting that countries that are able to steer their Science Technology and Innovation (STI) processes towards knowledge-based economies always enjoy more economic growth and prosperity than those who do not, since STI can provide solutions for specific problems and enhance a knowledge base for self-determined development, the impacts of STI on the economy and society are quite complex. Some studies have found that implementing STI with no regard to social repercussions could engender drawbacks on the part of society. As a result, studies of STI and their impact on the economy and society has been the subject of interest to a diverse set of academic disciplines (See, for example, J. Smith, 2009; Hornidge, 2011; Bechmann et al. 2009; Sumner et al. 2009; STEPS Centre, 2010 refered in Anna Schwachula, 2014.)

The CSTS appreciates this concern, so we have created a strong multi-disciplinary research team that has the capabilities and expertise to deliver more valuable projects which can fulfill both STI and ethical/social goals. We will apply new approaches to research; our approach is SE-T-I which aims at creating more value added innovations by taking socioeconomic needs into considerations when developing new technologies.

In short, the scope of our projects includes the following areas:

1. Interdisciplinary research that applies knowledge derived from social sciences and the humanities in order to generate new knowledge bases regarding a development of new technologies that satisfy human needs,
2. Ethical organizational planning which applies economic and business management expertise to design how to manage organizations efficiently when their new technologies are developed. This is aimed particularly at increasing economic efficiency while minimizing negative impacts on society.
